Question: What is a plug-in?

Answer: A plug-in is an link to an external application that handles embedded information in a web page. 

QuickTime (from Apple Computer) is a plug-in that allows embedding movies into a web page. This interactive Quicktime game was written with LiveStudio.

    Answer: Netscape has a plug-in page that links over 170 different plug-ins that are available. You must download and install them before they are available from your browser.
Question: Why should I download plug-ins?
    Answer: You don't have to - but - if you want to take advantage of some of the media enriched web sites you must have the required plug-ins to view many of the pages.
Question: Why do all the sites that require plugins so slow?
    Answer: Usually a plugin reads a file that is not text! The files are usually larger multimedia rich files that can be great - but there is a trade off with speed. My kids usually abandon www.zoogdisney.com way before it loads because many of the pages can take several minutes to download and run.
